Tailgating & Parties · Kansas City

KC tailgating is
a religion.

Smoke in the parking lot, cornhole on the asphalt, strangers who hand you a plate before they know your name. This is how Kansas City does gameday — and here's how to do it right, whether it's your first lot or your fortieth.

Start at the Ford District The first-timer's kit

Free entry

Ford Tailgate District

Open to everyone, west side of Lot M — no package required.

Plan ahead

Parking is prepaid

No cash at the tollbooths. Buy your pass before you leave home.

Get there early

Lots open ~4.5 hrs out

The Ford District fires up about four hours before kickoff.

All summer

Watch parties citywide

Downtown fan zones go off for the big summer matches.

The public option

The Ford Tailgate District

Don't have a crew with a canopy yet? You don't need one. The Ford Tailgate District is the front porch of Arrowhead — and it's free.

What it is

A free, open-to-the-public tailgate party on the west side of Lot M. Walk in, grab food, catch live music, and play lawn games with a few thousand of your soon-to-be friends. It's the easiest on-ramp to KC tailgate culture there is.

Free entry Opens ~4 hrs before kickoff

If you want more

  • All-inclusive tailgate packages also run out of Lot M — food, drinks and setup handled for you.
  • VIP options inside the gates for folks who'd rather skip the cooler-hauling entirely.
  • Either way, you still need a valid parking pass to bring a vehicle into the lots — see the rules below.

Gameday rules nobody tells you

Every season a wave of visitors learns these the hard way — at the tollbooth, at the gate, or circling the lot. Don't be that car.

  • Parking must be prepaid. The tollbooths don't take cash — buy your pass online ahead of time or you're not getting in.
  • Lots open ~4.5 hours before kickoff. Show up early; the line backs up fast on big days.
  • One vehicle per parking pass. Carpool buddies need their own pass — or pile into one car.
  • Clear-bag policy inside the stadium. Pack your gameday bag clear so you sail through the gate.
  • Rideshare drop-off is at the Missouri Welcome Center on Blue Ridge Cutoff, between Gates 1 & 2. Tell your driver that exactly.
  • No package, no problem. The Ford District is free — but the parking pass rule still applies to your car.
Bring everything

The first-timer's tailgate kit

Veterans pack like they're moving in for the day, because they basically are. Run this checklist before you back out of the driveway.

The setup

  • Folding chairs (one more than you think)
  • Pop-up canopy for sun & weather
  • Grill + plenty of charcoal
  • Coolers — food in one, drinks in another

The essentials

  • Trash bags (clean your spot — see below)
  • Portable battery for phones
  • Sunscreen, even in fall
  • Layers — KC weather turns on a dime

The game plan

  • Arrive early — lots open ~4.5 hrs out
  • Be a good lot neighbor (offer a plate)
  • Designate a driver or plan your rideshare
  • Prepaid parking pass loaded and ready

Golden rule of the lot: the people next to you are about to become your friends. Bring enough to share.

Beyond gameday

Watch parties & the big summer

No ticket, no tailgate, no problem. KC turns any game into a block party — and summer 2026 is going to be something else.

Downtown

KC Live! Block

The open-air heart of the Power & Light District — giant screens, a roaring crowd, and the city's go-to gathering for just about any game. Show up, find a railing, and let the block carry you.

Across town

Westport & sports bars

Westport and neighborhood sports bars all over KC pack out on game nights. Smaller rooms, bigger characters — pick your booth and stay a while.

Summer 2026

When the big summer matches come to town

Downtown fan zones and watch parties are going to go off for the big summer matches. Expect packed plazas, flags from every corner of the world, and an energy KC hasn't seen in years. Stake out your spot early and soak it in.

Tailgate like a local — and get home safe

Pace yourself

It's a long day. The smart ones are still standing at kickoff.

Hydrate

Water between everything else. KC sun and KC cold both bite.

Never drive after drinking

Rideshare or the streetcar downtown. No exceptions, ever.

Clean your spot

Bag your trash and leave the asphalt better than you found it.

Tailgate central

Find your crew, swap spots

Looking for a lot to join? Got an empty chair? Trading tips on the best entrance? Drop in — this is where KC tailgaters sort it out before the smoke clears.
